Evolution of Power System Failure Scenarios

This paper describes research into the application of evolutionary algorithms for generating failure scenarios for bulk power systems. We focus on a modified Ward Hale 6 bus system. An evolutionary algorithm is presented in detail. The developed EA proves to perform well on the test system and successfully generates a ‘compact’ failure scenario, requiring delibrate outaging of only two out of seven lines to induce a full failure of the system. Issues disscovered during development are discussed and future work is considered, with particular intrest in applying this EA to a much larger test system (IEEE 118 test system).
